YI-QUAN is a martial art for combat and health preservation.
It is not a collection of techniques, but
a system of grasping and bringing into full
play the fundamental objective principles
and underlying abilities of combat and human
movement. It was established in the late
1920's in China by Wang Xiangzhai. His approach
to martial art was revolutionary as he turned
away from the superficial level of techniques,
postures, and man-made principles, focusing
on the essence of martial art - the development
of devastating martial strength, grasp of
mechanics of human movement, and the unconscious,
spontaneous, and immediate reaction ability
to the opponents' intentions revealed through
their physical movements. This made the study
of rote techniques and fixed patterns of
response obsolete.

Traditionally, in most martial arts styles, the practitioner will first learn some fixed forms, then applications of the forms follow. However, it usually takes a long time to devolop true fighting ability with this traditional approach . YIQUAN is a much more direct method and gets to the heart of fighting ability by stressing the appropriate utilization of space and gravity through a balanced body structure. The attention is not on outside forms and techniques, on the essence in terms of rooting, internal energy development, centering, balancing, and expressing explosive power.
